Throughout my life I’ve always been fascinated with learning new things. This has led to numerous hobbies which I’ve tried. Even though I find a new one every month which I decide I want to do, I want to focus on things I actually do or used to do which I’ve spent more than a couple days on.
One thing which has been part of almost my entire life is trains. My dad started building a model train layout around the time I was born and I always had a great time just driving the trains around the scenery. My mother and grandmother both worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway until I was in my early teens. And I’ve been to Steamtown more times than I can count. I don’t necessarily know as much about trains as many other enthusiasts but I know enough to be able to appreciate them.
Until I find the time and money to build my own layout I go to my dad’s sometimes to run his new layout. And I still like to find time to stop and watch a train go by or find one to ride on for a day trip.
Building And Fixing
I’m a tinkerer just like my dad. When I was really young I remember one of my favorite things to play with being wood scraps and sawdust from projects my dad was working on. And when I got a little older I was able to help him out with things. Now that I’m an adult I love when I’m able to find time to make or fix something, especially when I have no idea how to do it.
I once had a truck which kept breaking down because I had no idea how to take care of it. I saw it as a blessing because I learned so many things about engine repair with that vehicle.
Before I bought my house, I was using an old dining room table as a work bench. So the first thing I did after moving was build myself a decent one. There was some wood which the previous owner left in the basement and since I wasn’t going for appearance it worked perfectly. It was the first big thing I had designed and built completely by myself and when it was done the only thing I messed up was cutting one side an inch shorter than the other which was easy to fix.
I have been studying, performing, and teaching percussion for over 15 years with a focus on marching percussion. I was a music education major in college but decided soon after that I preferred a different career path once an opportunity presented itself. Although I don’t find much time for performing anymore I do still enjoy to play and teach and try to encourage my students to push as much as I did when I was still performing.
I love video games. I’m not the best at them but I’d say I’m decent. I grew up with them. When I was a kid we had a Nintendo Entertainment System. We got the original PlayStation around the time it came out and the Nintendo 64. I still have our Sega Genesis and possibly a Sega Saturn. I got the Wii when it came out but the thrill of that didn’t last long for me. My Xbox and Xbox One lasted a little bit longer before they got put away for long term storage. I have a PlayStation 4 (read: Hulu Player) which I won from Taco Bell and a Nintendo GameCube which I don’t play much. I really only have the GameCube still because I have Wind Waker and Ocarina of Time for it. I also just got a Nintendo Switch about a month before writing this post.
Whenever I want to really play games though, I use my PC. I built my first one around the time I was in college, when I found out you could make them instead of buying slow bloatware filled ones. It lasted a while and I recently replaced it with a more upgraded one. I know there are people who have better setups than me and I can’t have every game on Ultra settings, but I can with some. I’ve also never had any issues with my old one or new one running slow when I’ve got 5 programs open trying to watch YouTube while I play games and write music and edit graphics for things.
I also really enjoy playing tabletop games. It’s usually difficult for me to find people who want to play and also can get our schedules lined up to actually find time to play.
Exercise And Health
I never realized how much I enjoyed exercise until I saw the results of not doing it and got back into it. Now if I miss a day because I’ve got meetings or something else going on I almost get anxiety. Really my only regret with exercise is that it took me so long to get into it as much as I am now. I feel great physically and mentally now. But I still have quite a bit to learn and so many things which I would like to push myself towards.
Every third Monday of the month I’ll go a little further into my many hobbies. I’ll have updates on things I’m currently doing with them and stories about what I’ve done in the past. The main exception being Exercise And Health. I’m going to be sharing that every month on the second Monday because it’s a newer hobby which I already have so many stories to share about.
